Is the American Sulphur Horse Association a club or registry?
The ASHA is legal and recognized registry for Sulphur horses existing from the Sulphur HMA and captivity born. It is governed by a Board of Directors, nominated and elected by the membership. It is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to collect, record and preserve the pedigree, as well promote, public awareness of the Sulphur horse.

Can I cross register my Sulphur in the American Sulphur Horse Association?
To qualify for ASHA registration, your horse must have records indicating it's origin is from Sulphur HMA, by BLM freeze brand and adoption papers or must be from the offspring of horses that fit the criteria. Any horse adopted out as a Sulphur originating from, or descending from horses that originated from other HMA’s is not accepted, regardless of being in another registry.  After your horse has been inspected and approved, the ASHA’s processing is up to 30 days. The American Sulphur Horse Association strives to protect, preserve and save the Spanish-type from being lost to non-Spanish type “Sulphur's” in private breeding programs.

Why is the American Sulphur Horse Association focused on strays that wander into Sulphur HMA?
Because those horses are of non-Spanish type and some strays are caught up in the gathers.

I heard that some out off types have been in the adoptions and adopted out as “Sulphur's”.
Some off type horses have been in the pens and every adoption. As far as we know, this has happened in the last two adoptions, when some of the strays (possibly from Nevada) and the Southern side of the Sulphur HMA side were rounded up and adopted out as Sulphur's.

When is the next Sulphur gather?
The next planned gather on the Sulphur HMA is in the summer of 2006. (At that time, if current reproductive rates continue, there will be approximately 250 head of wild horses removed from the HMA.  Currently, the population on the HMA is above the Appropriate Management Level (AML) by 50 head and by the time we gather we will have two foaling seasons adding to population.)  The majority of the horses will be gathered from the south part of the HMA, which does not have as many Spanish type horses, but there are some.  Once these horses are gathered and prepared for adoptions they will be offered at both  local and  Internet adoptions.

Why is University of Kentucky being used for genotype and parentage DNA testing?
Dr. Gus Cothran has done studies on the Sulphur horses and is well known for his research on the Sulphur horses. Also UoKY has Sulphur horse’s DNA samples from past Sulphur horse’s that may either be deceased or lost. The American Sulphur Horse Association has a private account between UoKY and ASHA for DNA testing of Sulphur horses, for gene markers, parentage and identification.  Parentage DNA is done by hair samples, 30 sent to UoKY through the ASHA, and genotype of the old Spanish markers is done by a blood sample drawn by the vet and sent UoKY .

Why is the Sulphur horse being called a Breed?
Due to being linked in the Iberian Breed Groups, out of the USA’s wild horse HMA’s population, they deserve to stand out on their own as a breed.
