Registration
The Sulphur horses are of old Spanish type. The only exceptions to this are found in those horses who have wandered into the HMA and are then adopted out. Once rounded up and removed by the BLM these horses are branded as "Sulphur's" because that was their originating HMA of capture. The other exception are the horses that have been adopted from a non-Spanish herd, who live to the far South of the HMA's range. This non-Spanish herd, who vary distinctly in type from the Spanish horses, was mistakenly included in the Sulphur HMA boundaries when the boundaries were first formed and have in the past been adopted out as "Sulphurs" (and may again in the future unless the herd is renamed). "There is a distinct difference in the far north end, and far south end horses on the HMA. That is one of the reasons why we are re-looking at the boundaries of the HMA" Gus Warr.
ASHA will not knowingly register any of these non-Spanish horses. The BLM paperwork does not differentiate between type, this is why ASHA has a breed standard and photo inspection process for registering horses. Although there is a slight difference in the type found within the Sulphur HMA in regards to Spanish phenotype this difference can "Easily be explained by the Spanish Origins of the herd" Dr. Phil Sponenberg.
Photographs must be clear, not blurry or distorted, must be close-up and show all markings
Application must include (6) four color photographs of horse:
1 left side, 1 right side, 1 front, 1 rear and 1 close up of the freeze brand.
1 favorite photo to be used for the registration certificate.
On the back of EACH photo or DVD, please print:
A) Your name and your mailing address. B) The horses name.
**When mailing any ORIGINAL papers, please keep a photo copy for your records. To make sure that your package is rec'd, have the Post Office send your package with a RETURN RECIPT ADDRESS CARD or a SIGNED RECEIPT. The USPO fee isn't much.
If you prefer you can send a DVD, it should be of sufficient duration as to allow adequate assessment of the horse's movement and conformation. The film should clearly show all markings, including freeze-brand, if any, as well as a close-up of the horse's profile. A clear, full view of each side of the horse (both freeze brand side and right-side) should be seen, as well as a rear-view of the horse showing angulation of the horse's hindquarters, and a front view showing chest and leg structure.
DNA testing is NOT MANDATORY. However, some owners want to do the DNA testing for parentage verification. ASHA is currently checking on information and prices. (This is not to be confused with blood-marker analysis as performed by Dr. Gus Cothran, formerly of the University of Kentucky.) Sulphur Horses that are accepted for admission into ASHA will qualify for one of the following categories:
1). Foundation Division A-1: The Foundation Division A-1 is for wild-born Sulphur Horses captured from the Sulphur Springs HMA which display acceptable Spanish phenotype. When applying for registration, a copy of the BLM papers denoting the horse's freeze-brand is required.
*Note: For those owners desiring for their registered Sulphurs to be eligible for inclusion into the Iberian Sport Horse Association, should contact that association for information. The registry of Iberian Blood horses has been given to the Iberian Warmblood Registry International. Contact them for transfers of horses that have registered in the past, for both the Iberian Sporthorse and the Iberian Warmblood. http://iberianwarmblood.com/
2). Permanent Division A-1: The Permanent Division A-1 is for captive-born offspring of a registered Sulphur sire and dam. *Note: No video or DVD is required for the registration of foals from either Permanent Division.
4). Half-Sulphur Division: This Division is for offspring of a Sulphur Horse and a non-Sulphur Horse of any other breed or type. Known descendants of this mating cannot achieve "fullblood" or "purebred" status, regardless of how many matings to full Sulphur Horses may occur.
The ideal matings are between Sulphur to Sulphur, to preserve and protect the gene pool and Spanish ancestry of this rare and beautiful Spanish / Iberian horse. Many half Sulphur horses breedings have produced some nice looking foals. The BLM have been doing the same thing for many years.
5). Hardship Division: On rare occasions a horse of known Sulphur breeding is presented for registration whose sire and dam are unregistered with any organization, or deceased or otherwise unavailable. Such a horse may be considered for registration with ASHA in the Hardship Division. Due to the nature of these circumstances it is especially important that all information pertinent to the background of the horse in question be presented with the application, in addition to the photographs/videotape(DVD) requirement previously mentioned. This information will include, but is not limited to:
A)=Last known owner of the horse. B)=Any documents which can verify Sulphur Springs HMA origin (BLM papers). C=Owner(s) of sire and dam.
*PLEASE NOTE: When submitting a horse for registration under the Hardship Division DO NOT mail the registration fee with the horse's application and accompanying documentation/information. You will be informed by mail or email, if your horse is eligible for registration within ASHA.
